Preparing For Your Session

Family Portrait Overview ~ Preparing For Your Session ~ On Location ~ Gallery ~ Pricing

Prepare to have fun.

Prepare to do a little grooming on site.  Inevitably hair gets a little blown in the wind, make-up needs a little touch-up, etc.

Prepare to be on time.

Prepare to spend about 30-45 minutes in our session together.

The question I get the most from families is what to wear.  This is probably a conversation better suited for the phone, but I’ll put a few guidelines here.  We’ll definitely discuss clothing before our session.

  • It’s not as important what you wear, but that you’re all dressed as if you belong together.
  • This doesn’t mean you wear identical uniforms.
  • It does mean you wear similar color schemes.
  • Let’s say you’ve chosen khaki and white as your color scheme.  It’s ok if someone wears khaki shorts and a long sleeve white shirt, and someone else wears khaki slacks and a white t-shirt, and someone else wears white capris and a khaki shirt.
  • In terms of color schemes, I prefer earthy, muted, dull pastel, black, white, gray, or neutral tones.
  • I want to make sure your faces are what the viewers look at, not your clothes.  I want your clothes to be photographically unimportant.
  • Blue jeans with light colored shirts, khaki and white or green or black, or black pants with light tan shirts are all good examples of colors that won’t compete with your faces.
  • AVOID at all costs red, yellow, stripes, and plaids.
