In photographer-speak, there’s a few different styles of wedding photography. There’s traditional, fashion, and photojournalistic.
Traditional wedding photography is scripted. (Remember the cake cutting pictures I mentioned on the Anatomy page?) The photographer runs the show. They go down a checklist of photos they need for the album – no more, no less.
Fashion wedding photography is highly stylized – think of the ads you see in the bridal magazines. It’s like having your wedding in a studio! They use tons of lights and equipment and several assistants. This gets very, very expensive to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
Photojournalism exploded in popularity in the 1990’s and 2000’s. This was partly an indictment against traditional wedding photography. It was also because advances in both film and digital technology made shooting a higher volume of pictures possible. When done well this style is fun and casual. When done poorly you’re left with lots of pictures that have no meaning and are void of anything interesting. More is not necessarily better.
Somewhere along the way some untalented photojournalistic wedding photographers started staging many elements of the wedding, trying very hard to make things look natural. They did this because they didn’t have the technical ability to respond to rapidly changing circumstances nor the ability to recognize when amazing moments were happening. Needless to say, their pictures looked forced and unnatural and they detracted from the natural flow of the wedding.
Couples who are remarrying gravitate to great, true photojournalism. It’s exactly where they are in their lives. They’re looking for a real honest representation of themselves and their friends and family – and they’re wanting the best looking, most interesting version of that representation. That’s what I provide.
As you look through my gallery of wedding images you’ll see a few themes develop.
- Real images. These are real people expressing real emotion.
- Sharp images. Technical ability combined with knowing what and when to photograph are essential to meaningful photographs.
- Intriguing images. People feel drawn in to the pictures like they’re really there.
I mentioned a special offer – here it is. I will do a free, no obligation engagement photo shoot. This is a little preview to see if my style is compatible with what you’re looking for in a photographer. Contact me and mention this offer and we’ll schedule an appointment and discuss the details.
